DPCC Co-Chairs Fight to Block TrumpCare

May 4, 2017

Co-Chairs Spoke on the House Floor To Oppose the Disastrous TrumpCare Bill and Demand Republicans Stop Efforts to Raise Health Costs for America’s Families

WASHINGTON, DC – The Co-Chairs of the House Democratic Policy & Communications Committee (DPCC) - U.S. Congresswoman Bustos, U.S. Congressman Cicilline, and U.S. Congressman Jeffries - took to the House Floor to demand Republicans abandon the TrumpCare bill and end their assault on health care for hardworking Americans. TrumpCare means higher health costs, more than 24 million Americans losing health coverage, gutting key protections, a crushing age tax, and stealing from Medicare.

TrumpCare would result in 24 million Americans losing their health care coverage over the next 10 years. It would force families to pay higher premiums and deductibles, increasing out-of-pocket costs – all while handing $600 billion in tax breaks to the rich and large corporations. It also removes key protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions - making it all but impossible for millions of Americans fighting illness to afford the coverage they desperately need.

Below are excerpts from the Co-Chairs' remarks and links to the videos:

"Mr. Speaker, this is not how Washington is supposed to work. We're supposed to improve the lives of hardworking families. Instead, this reckless and dangerous TrumpCare bill would undermine both the health and economic security of millions of Americans. People like Emily Carlson. She's a small business owner and mother of two from rural Abingdon, Illinois. She lives with M.S., a lifelong and very expensive pre-existing condition. Before healthcare reform, Emily and her husband, Kevin, a farmer, often had to sit around the table at night, go over their bills and decide between sickness or debt from one month to the next. If this bill passes, that's a choice they're going have to face once again. For families like the Carlsons, TrumpCare means higher costs, fewer choices and worse coverage. It's time to put hardworking families first. Do the right thing and vote against this bill."

"This is the cruelest and most immoral thing I've seen the Republican Party do to the American people. Tens of thousands of Americans will die if this bill passes. That's a fact. Republicans have been deceiving the American people for the last eight years. They don't care about working people. And this bill proves it….Don't try to tell me that they care about single moms who won't be able to put food on the table after you pass this bill. And don't try to tell me that they care about cancer survivors who are going to pay $140,000 more for health insurance. I don't know how anyone can look their constituents in the eye if they vote for this bill."

"The House Majority has once again made clear that under Republican rule, the system is rigged. The deck is stacked against hardworking Americans - and exhibit A is your reckless Republican health care plan. Under TrumpCare, 24 million Americans will lose access to health insurance. Under TrumpCare, a draconian age tax will be imposed on people between 50 and 64. Under TrumpCare, costs will go up, premiums will go up, co-pays will go up, deductibles will go up. Under TrumpCare tens of millions of Americans who are living with pre-existing conditions will be screwed. House Republicans are out to destroy the American health care system…"
