DPCC Co-Chair Matt Cartwright: Democrats Will Hold The Administration Accountable While Fighting For the People

January 22, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Matt Cartwright, Co-Chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC), appeared on Outnumbered Overtime With Harris Faulkner on FOX News to discuss how Congressional Democrats are fighting for the people while also fulfilling our constitutional oversight responsibilities to hold the Trump Administration accountable. Below are excerpts from the interview. Click here to watch the video

"First of all, I think the foundation ought to be laid about why we do hearings at all from the Oversight Committee. Remember, oversight is really a constitutional responsibility of the Congress. The Congress is going to fund government. Remember, Congress holds the purse strings. If we are going to fund government, it is fair, proper, and fitting for us to look into how the money is being spent and what government is up to - including the executive branch. So, if ever there is a question about whether there ought to be a hearing, I fall on the side of yeah, we ought to look into it. It may be nothing come or it may be something there."

"The question is, should he have recused himself the way Attorney General Jeff Sessions did and if not, what oversight did he do in the last couple of mouths. All of these are fair game. Again, there may be nothing there at all but he did make some fairly critical remarks are the Mueller probe. And if he's the one overseeing it, the question that suggests itself is has he done anything to curtail the probe."

"Here is one thing that you haven't mentioned. Rod Rosenstein was invited by the Republicans while they were in the minority of the Oversight Committee, to come and have a meeting with them. Voluntarily, without a subpoena. And, Harris, he agreed. Rod Rosenstein agreed to come in and have a meeting with them. Then they canceled the meeting. So, now they want to subpoena him and have him come in and testify under oath. All of that is fine. I suspect he won't even need a subpoena. Rod Rosenstein will probably come in of his own accord and testify."

"I think that's going to be very short hearing. You mention The New York Times report about him talking about wearing a wire with the President and all that. The New York Times reported that it was a joke, and that it was said sarcastically."
