DPCC Co-Chair Jeffries Slams Republican Partisan Attacks on Special Counsel Robert Mueller

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Co-Chair of the House Democratic Policy & Communications Committee (DPCC), appeared on MSNBC's Hardball to discuss attempts by Washington Republicans to attack and discredit special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Earlier in the day, Jeffries questioned Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on President Trump's efforts to improperly influence the Department of Justice and its investigations.

"We know that Robert Mueller, who is leading this investigation has been widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans for decades because he is a talented law enforcement professional. He is not going to allow politics to influence this investigation. He will follow the facts, interpret the law and that will result in whatever conclusion that he ultimately reaches."

"Mueller is approaching this investigation with a degree of surgical precision that I believe has Donald Trump clearly rattled. The President has directed his allies on Capitol Hill to suggest that this investigation is all a witch hunt or a hoax or a fraud when that has no basis in reality."

"Unfortunately, I do not think the House Judiciary Committee under Republican leadership will proceed with impeachment should the Special Counsel bring forth an indictment against the President. Constitutionally, Congress is a separate and co-equal branch of government. We do not work for the President of the United States, Donald Trump, we work for the American people. But my colleagues on the other side of the aisle don't seem to have gotten that memo even though it was written by James Madison and the founders of the constitution.

"The only way this President will ever be held accountable is if the gavel is in the hands of the Democratic Party."
