DPCC Chair Cicilline: Democrats Are Working To Get The Truth For The American People

May 14, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Cicilline, Chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC), appeared on Kasie DC on MSNBC to discuss Special Counsel Mueller coming before the House Judiciary Committee to testify. Cicilline highlighted that House Democrats are working For the People to lower health care costs, rebuild America's infrastructure and take on corruption in Washington. "But the Committee and the American people must hear from the Special Counsel so he can walk the committee and the American people through the findings in his report, answer questions we have about the context, clarifications, judgments he made. So I think it's important he come before the Committee."

"I think there's no question that this is a constitutional crisis. This is unprecedented conduct by the President of the United States to impede oversight. By the way, it's not just oversight related to the Mueller Report, it's oversight related to the separation of children policy, to conflict of interest with his tax returns, the control of the VA."

"Well I think for sure it can easily come a point where a President's conduct in preventing Congress to conduct oversight in and of itself would constitute impeachment. As you know that was Article III in the Nixon impeachment. I don't know that we're there yet, we still have work to do to get the full Mueller Report. I think every single day that the President attempts to -- again, it's not stonewall the congress, it's stonewalling the American people. We're there trying to follow the facts and get the truth and demonstrate that no one is above the law. This is a stonewalling and cover up and an obstruction of the American people and their right to know the truth. Certainly we're going to litigate this, and we're going to issue subpoenas and attempt to compel compliance with them. But there well may come a day, and it may not be far off, that this in and of itself is a separate basis to begin impeachment, we we're not there yet, we still have a process to follow. But the question you have to ask yourself is why is the President so afraid for congress to conduct oversight and bring witnesses before the committee so the American people can hear from them."
