"…when a lawful subpoena is issued by Congress, witnesses are expected to comply with that subpoena. We have to have that ability to enforce that, by judging people in contempt. Our oversight responsibilities will be completely eliminated if the executive branch just gets to decide who's going to appear and what witnesses will come and what documents we'll get. They could effectively extinguish congressional oversight. This is an important responsibility we have, we need to be able to compel witnesses and the production of documents in order to do our work properly and make informed judgments and we intend to use the tools at our disposal to enforce the subpoenas of the committee."
"We need to hear from [Don McGahn] exactly what the President directed him to do, exactly context of which it happened to further understand what the judgments were made in the Mueller report and what the President's conduct was. You know, the American people have a right to see these witnesses testify, to help understand what is in the Mueller report and to also add to the information we have from the report so we can make a judgment about next steps."
